Sandwich Glass Black Amethyst Bear Pomade. ca. 1850 3 3/4" tall. These jars were used for bear grease and sold to cosmetic distributors.  The popularity of these prompted the glass company to sell them as match holders.  The head is removable and was sealed so that a knife had to be used to pry off the top, thus damaging the necks of most jars.  Occasionally a perfect one has survived, but rarely.  I have several of these in various condition, in prices ranging from

$150.00 to $400.00.
